  6. Jaydeepsinh

    Canadian Tire Corporation Limited
Advice for future Lambton College international students

Language: For most of you English language will be your biggest challenge. But remember that the reason you are here (and not in a university in your own country) is to learn the language and culture. This will be a springboard to great opportunities and experiences in your future career and personal life.

    Name: Jaydeepsinh Gohil
    Home Country: India
Program: Business Management – International Business
    Graduation Year: 2013
Current Employer: Canadian Tire Corporation Limited
    Job Title: IT Sourcing Specialist

    Why I chose Lambton College
I choose Lambton College for the following reasons:
    1) Government legislation regarding study, work and living: For any international student especially interested to study, work and live in Canada it is important to understand some of the essential criteria set by the legislation. Following to this, Lambton college falls under Student Partner Program (SPP) which is an innovative administrative framework designed to streamline the visa application process for international students studying in Canada from India. Therefore, SPP has reduced the stress of students who are preparing to leave home and study in Canada by improving the Study Permit application checklist, which helps students ensure they have all the necessary documentation to apply to study in Canada. The possibility of getting the VISA approval is higher if there are no conflicts in your application. Lambton has two campuses in Ontario, Sarnia and Toronto. I was enrolled in the Toronto campus and I found a great part time work opportunity and a good living standard as Toronto being the provincial capital of Ontario.
    2) Study Program and Colleges: Lambton has verity of programs that anyone can choose based on their primary education. I was interested in Business Management – International Business program due to that fact that my primary education was based on technical and I wanted to make my profile unique by adding management skills which would make my profile strong enough to compete and be considered as per the current industry standards.
In Canada, there are many colleges offering the same programs which you will find in Lambton. However, all the programs are delivered on approved course outline which again I believe the same for all the colleges. On the other hand, fees structure and facilities varies. Therefore, the content of the course remain intact regardless of college.
    3) Tuition Fees: According to my knowledge, Lambton has the lowest tuition fee structure compare to the other colleges in Ontario.
    4) Co-op program option: I chose Lambton College because of two-year program with a co-op work placement.

How Lambton College prepared me for my current position
Lambton College prepared me very well for this position. It gave me the knowledge, skills and training to handle most situations in business today. The instructors were incredible with their wealth of knowledge, and they took the time to provide more detail if we needed it. It allowed me the opportunity to get hands-on experience while working in my Coop Work Placement, to practice and use a variety of tools that we talked about in class.

How Lambton College helped me achieve my goals
When I started my academic journey with Lambton College my goal was to earn the understanding to become a business professional. To achieve my goal, Lambton College gave me the knowledge, hands on skills and training to handle most situations in today’s business world. This was achieved by in class room group discussion, collaborative approach with the instructors and continued guidance throughout my academic period.

    Social:
While studying in Lambton College, learn and achieve as much you can. Things that you may encounter in terms of studies, communication and in the workplace will allow you to explore Canadian values, culture, language and last but not least work ethics.
    Job and Money:
Having a part-time job is a good way to help pay for your expenses and learn some English. However many students don’t get the balance right and working too much causes their studies to suffer and they fail some subjects. Then their pocket-money job ends up costing their parents thousand dollars. Always think about the reason why are you here? – You are here for the study first.
Finally, stay focused and touristy for any new experience.

Advice for new students to help prepare them for their co-op work term
I know co-op is a mystery for many international students. I was clueless about it, but i was determined to find one and one suitable for my skills. I would advise students to analyze their skills and list companies that look for similar skill sets as they possess. Start looking for jobs they would like to do during their co-op 6-8 months before their co-op term begins. This will give you enough time to think and plan. Finally, never let yourselves down, DREAM BIG. “No dream is too big, and no dreamer too small.” Be confident and know that you will succeed as long as you believe in your dreams
