    Overview of the work you did during your co-op work term
    I did 5 projects and learned new technologies. I created an active directory domain for a critical network, I was administering common DMZ which is a very critical network regarding security, I built a VMware server for rapid server provision, and I was working on a very important project that involved restructuring and reconstruction of the server room and network cables. In that project, I had the opportunity to communicate with different department supervisors and engineers for network outages and plant operations by providing them with very specific time windows of outages.

    Most rewarding aspect from your co-op work term
    1. I learned new virtualization technologies which I consider most rewarding. 2. I was able to experience working in data center environment. 3. After completing server room restructuring project, I received two focus recognition cards from my manager and project manager.

    Biggest challenge about your co-op work term
    In one of my projects, there were so many people involved. Some were executives, project managers and quality assurance managers. They all had differing views and expectations. I had to meet everyone’s expectations with their schedule alignment. I saw it as great opportunity to polish my time management skills and learn how to make people happy.

    First of all, I appreciate all the instructors and TA. I learned a lot from Lambton College.

    Advice for new students to help prepare them for their co-op work term
    I want to say “Do it right, be the best, be bold and win together”. Focus on what you are doing. Understand the task first, then think of ways you can complete it more efficiently. Do not complete the program just for the sake of a degree. Do it for knowledge. One of the thing, I want to say all new students “information practical” become knowledge why I said because Lambton college offers both it is up to you how do you want to take it.

    • Provided Level 2 support for Enterprise customer inquiries and issues via inbound voice and email interactions taking ownership of cases and providing resolution to customer’s issues.
    • Gathered information and performed advanced troubleshooting of Desktop, Handheld and BlackBerry Enterprise Server inquiries from Specialists and associates. Acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in these platforms.

    It was fast paced and sometimes the workload was cumbersome.

    The courses I took during my program did set me up for the work environment at Blackberry, ex: working on servers and exchange environments.

    Advice for new students to help prepare them for their co-op work term
    Make sure you apply as early as possible as the competition is tough in getting co-ops. Speak to Karen Hendra for help in editing your resume and setting up a mock interview. She’s was a real help and I can’t thank her enough.

    Canadian Tire has over 400 retail stores across Canada. As a Service Analyst, we provided technical support to all the retail stores by ensuring a smooth operation and 99% uptime of the IT and retail infrastructure. More often than not, we provided application and infrastructure support to one of the subsidiaries called PARTSOURCE.

    Biggest challenge about your co-op work term
    The most challenging thing was keeping up with the high rate and implementation of new technology by the organization which  ultimately helped to broaden my knowledge of using different technologies that drive the retail business.

    How Lambton College prepared you for your co-op work term
    Frankly speaking, Lambton College was instrumental to the success of my Co-op work term from inception to completion. This was made possible due to the following:

    1. The unalloyed commitment and support by my co-op coordinators, Karen Hendra and Kim Hunt in ensuring we get early preparation and all the necessary exposure through community volunteer activities and review of resume and cover letters. They are awesome!
    2. The constant update of our academic curriculum to match with industry demand. (Introduction of ITIL and Project Management. Please introduce more business courses. The IT world is evolving and organisations need graduates with good blend of technical and business knowledge)
    3. They prepared us for relevant industry certifications

    Advice for new students to help prepare them for their co-op work term
    My advice to new students are:

    1. Start your job search early.
    2. Listen to and work with the Coordinators and Instructors to critically review your resume and cover letters.
    3. As much as possible, collaborate and network with students who have graduated so you can learn from their experience.
    4. Network in the community.
    5. Maintain a good academic standing as you would be competing with students from other schools, and grades may be used for selection.
    6. Get as many relevant certifications as possible.

    Overview of the work you did during your co-op work term
    I was the System Administrator responsible for handling day to day operations of the Organization which included network problems, printing queue problems, upgrading PCs, suggesting up to date technology or laptops to buy, replacing old PC modules with new ones, etc. During my term I was also an Adult Instructor and gave teaching lessons to senior citizens and helped them with their technology problems. Basic lessons on how to send an e-mail, create an account on Social Media, staying in touch with their grandchildren through Skype, etc.

    When all my students understood how user-friendly technology was and it was even easier to apply to their lives.

    Day to day operations were challenging as there were always new problems arising.

    Lambton College prepared me through Business Ethic classes, and day to day challenges in Lab and work environment. I was given various responsibilities and tested over time.

The Information Technology Professional program is a two year program where students gain highly marketable skills in computer networking and systems administrative support. The program enables students to become proficient in the practices and techniques used in the management of modern IT networking infrastructures including wired and wireless networks. Throughout the program, students will gain proficiency in Windows operating systems, virtualization technologies, Windows Server administration, disaster recovery, and the configuration of networks and network services, security from desktop to enterprise.

This program creates a unique, stimulating learning environment in which students can safely master current workplace business requirements, resulting in a smooth transition from education to employment. Opportunities are provided to learn operating systems, business application deployment and networking technologies. Instructional methodology across all courses integrates discovery – learning techniques, real-life simulations and hands-on applications. Students apply their acquired knowledge and skills to industry-based cases, simulations and projects. In addition, students will expand their business and leadership skills through participating in three collaborative team projects and co-op in the final term. Foundational knowledge for a variety of professional certification exams will be provided, including: A , Windows 7 and Cisco CCNA certification. Certification requirements are listed at microsoft.com, cisco.org and comptia.org. Additional prep time and fees will be required.
